UI for Role Switching

with 4 comments

Here is the UI for Role Switching that I developed. I made the design to be similar to that of the login screen though there were some changes. The changes I made was just so that the UI for role switching is not confused for that of logging in.

The option to switch roles added for admins to the top right of the screen

The UI for role switching added to the right of the screen

The view of the UI in the browser

The screen displayed after the admin with first name “admin” switches role to student c5anthei

Error Messages:

The error messages are a mirror of the ones for login

Error message displayed when user name and password fields are blank

The password field was blank

The user name was invalid

Input about the quality of the work and some error cases that I might not have considered will be appreciated.

  1. I like it!

I especially like the “admin is logged in as…”

Does the “Switch Role” box come up as a modal dialogue? I’m guessing that you see the box after clicking on “switch role” in the upper right of the screen.

Is the “admin admin (a)” in the top screen shot just role, name, username? It looks odd, but that might be just because of the choice of names.

  2. The Switch Role box is an entire page on its own. It is loaded after the “Switch role” is clicked on the top right of the screen.

The “admin admin (a)” is a Markus feature that I didn’t modify. It represents “firstName lastName (username)”. The first and last name of the user with username a is admin.

    Thank you for the comments.

  3. Nice work! I agree with Karen, I like this logged in as as well. It’s great! A few random comments: I’d make this login-like form a modal dialog. It appears to be a natural fit for a modal 🙂 Also, I’m not sure if this is the right place for the switch role link. Maybe we could make it more clear that it goes with the logged in username and not so much with the “logout” link? What do you think?

  4. The modal dialog sounds good actually. I would look into creating one for role switching.

With regards to the location of role switching would you like it to be before “Choose Language”?
